Pressure Relief Valve

Table of Content

Pressure Relief Valves are designed to control and manage flow by diverting it when the inlet pressure reaches a set level. The most common type, known as direct-acting, uses a spring to push against a diaphragm or piston to keep the valve closed.

When the inlet pressure exceeds the spring’s set point, the valve opens, allowing excess pressure to be released through the outlet or directly to the atmosphere, depending on its design. Once the pressure drops below the set point, the valve closes, maintaining the desired pressure downstream.

These valves are crucial in pumped systems where maintaining consistent pressure is essential. They act as divert valves by redirecting fluid back to the reservoir when the pressure surpasses the set point. When the system pressure decreases due to lower demand, the valve closes to allow the pressure to build up again.
